More and more these days, Twitter seems to be dominated by jerks who think violence is funny or even acceptable. These people apparently believe that some people are deserving of vigilante-style violence. In reality, no one – not even a common criminal – deserves to be a victim of violence. Anyway, two recent incidents brought the Twitter jerks out in force.
One involved George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin in 2012. Now I be the first to admit that Zimmerman himself is a jerk. He was recently in a Florida restaurant bragging about killing Martin (really classy guy there). But his bragging paled in comparison to what happened next. A man who didn’t like his bragging punched him in the face. As soon as the Twitter jerks heard about it, they began joking about it and making statements claiming that he deserved it. I don’t understand how anyone can make light of violence, much less support it.
Then there was the incident involving Dylann Roof, the young white man accused of the massacre of nine black parishioners at a church in Charleston, SC. Roof was attacked and beaten in jail by a black inmate on August 4th. Again, when it was reported, the Twitter jerks began to rejoice and post declarations of their approval in 140 characters or less. These ignorant people obviously do not comprehend the fact that the only punishment that Roof and other criminals deserve is that meted out by our criminal justice system. Any other form of punishment amounts to a disgusting criminal act.
