Those of us who are social conservatives were disappointed that Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination. Unfortunately, no one can be sure where that guy really stands on any issue. We would much rather have seen a true believer like Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Marco Rubio, or Scott Walker win it. But, like they say, you can’t win ‘em all. We all just need to accept the fact that Trump is the nominee and move on. But we can also relish the fact that we got the platform. In fact, we walked away with it.
Yes, the GOP platform this time around is one of the most favorable ever to the cause of social conservatism. It denounces hard-core pornography as detrimental to our society. It condemns most forms of abortion and calls for more restrictions on the procedure as well as a prohibition on public funding of it. It strongly advocates traditional marriage and demands that the courts protect its sanctity. It also stands up for one's right to not have his or her religious freedom infringed upon. Donald Trump may have won the nomination but the bottom line is that we won the thing that was the most important. The platform represents the party’s future, so it’s far from being merely a consolation prize.
