In a recent column, Kathleen Parker lamented the way the mainstream media is constantly blasted by conservative news sources, radio talk show hosts, and many Republican politicians. While it is true that much of the bashing the mainstream media gets is undeserved and the conservative media is often even more biased, the mainstream media created this monster. Collectively, it has no one to blame but itself for its current predicament.
For decades, the mainstream news services operated with no competition or alternate viewpoints. Members of media sat in their ivory towers and arrogantly talked down to the general public, convinced that their views were far superior to those of the folks who lived in the real world. They expected their audience to credulously accept their spoon-fed agenda. During that time, the media’s liberal bias (although usually presented in a very subtle manner) infuriated conservative readers, listeners, and viewers. People yearned for an alternative or at least something that was impartial. That void was eventually filled by talk radio and conservative news organizations like Fox News, which coined the phrase “we report, you decide.”
Even in the face today’s alternatives, the mainstream media still predictability and stubbornly sides with liberal politicians over their conservative counterparts, feminists and the radical gay lobby over supporters of traditional values, firearms fraidy-cats and gun control advocates over staunch defenders of the Second Amendment, crusaders for social justice over guardians of personal freedom, extreme environmentalists over private property owners and the fossil fuel industry, illegal immigrants over those of us who believe in secure borders, atheism and all minority religions (including Islam) over Christianity, the lawless over the rule of law, freeloaders and whiners over entrepreneurs and innovators, etc. And people like Ms. Parker can’t understand why we don’t show them more respect? Really?
