Netflix recently announced that it will begin offering its employees unlimited parental leave for up to a year after a child is born or adopted. This is paid leave that will apply to both parents. The company already offers unlimited vacation and sick leave to all of its employees. This is an insane leave policy that is wrong on so many levels. Unless they change it soon, it will ultimately destroy the company. With unlimited vacation, how can they prevent employees from taking vacation 52 weeks a year? That sounds like nice work if you can get it, but it also sounds like something that can drain a company’s coffers when abused.
And the unlimited parental leave might be a great hook for prospective parents, but what about high quality employees who don’t want kids? What would be their motivation to work for Netflix? Is there a separate but equal benefit for them? If not, wouldn’t it make them resentful of their coworkers who are parents? They would be indirectly and involuntarily helping subsidize a benefit they will never get. Keep in mind that the amount of money it’s costing Netflix to fund unlimited parental leave is keeping salaries lower for all of their employees, including those who don’t want kids.
