Although we do not have a true class system, western culture still draws circles around people, and expects them to stay in those circles be content with their lot in life. When and if someone refuses to stay in their circle, people are appalled. These circles are drawn based on factors like one’s looks, intelligence, social skills, physical fitness, courage (or lack thereof), socio-economic status, education, work experience, talent, refinement, and age. There are other factors, too, but those are the main ones.
Anyway, if someone, for example, wants to marry someone who is not in their own circle, people get really upset. They seriously want to keep you in the circle they’ve drawn you into. Another example is someone speaking out or writing about a subject that people feel they are not qualified or don’t have the proper pedigree to comment on. Society frowns on that also. Well, I’m one uppity white boy who refuses to stay his place. I’m not going to be content with my lot in life unless or until I can occupy the lot of my choice.
