Once again, the media has given a mass shooter exactly what he wanted – notoriety. These news people never learn. They could have used the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting to send a message to all potential perpetrators of future mass shootings. That message? We are not going to dignify your sick actions by even mentioning your name. You are going to remain nothing more than an anonymous footnote in history.
However, what we ended up with was another opportunity lost. They couldn’t wait to mention this guy’s name early and often. They couldn’t wait for their “opportunity” to paste his face all over our TV screens. Even if he gets the death penalty, this guy has won. These guys always do. The media always hands them the victory right off the bat, without so much as a fight.
They seem obsessed with this particular killer, describing his looks in detail and breathlessly relating his every move at his first court appearance. They even marveled at the fact that he was acting “strangely” in the courtroom. Get that – an accused mass killer acting strangely in court. Really? Go figure! I would never have expected that.
Anyway, all of this attention and hype only guarantees that there will always more people seeking infamy for murdering innocent men, women, and children. And it’s sad almost beyond comprehension.
