Something that I had suspected all along was confirmed for me not too many days ago. That suspicion was that most of these liberal groups who purport to exist primarily to promote the concept of the separation of church are quite hypocritical, and are instead just interested in keeping the church out of state matters and not the other way around.
The recent attempt by the Obama administration to force Catholic hospitals and other church-based employers to provide free contraceptives to their employees has brought out the true colors of at least one of these organizations, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AUSCS). Now when the government tries to impose its will in violation of the rights of religious groups to freely practice their beliefs, one would think that organizations such as AUSCS would come running to the defense of the religious groups, right? Wrong! Yeah, they came running alright – but to the defense of the government.
Imagine that – an organization that supposedly exists solely to help maintain the wall of separation between church and state is in favor of breaching that wall, under the right circumstances, of course. Think about it. This would be like PETA favoring animal cruelty when the conditions are right. Obviously, the difference between PETA and AUSCS is that PETA sincerely opposes all animal cruelty whereas AUSCS doesn’t really oppose all breaches in the separation of church and state.
AUSCS clearly opposes the concept of the church trying to impose its will on the state. They are very adamant, if not outright fanatical about that. But when the state attempts to impose its will on the church, they are apparently just okay with that. At those times, they could easily be called Americans United against the Separation of Church and State.
