People can blame President Obama all they want to, but the recent failure of the so-called congressional super-committee to come up with a budget-cutting plan is not his fault. Members of that committee from both parties put politics and party loyalty ahead of the needs of our country and therefore failed to do what they were commissioned to do. The last time I checked, President Obama was never a part of that committee and hasn’t been a member of Congress since December of 2008.
As a result of their inaction, a bunch of painful, across-the-board budget cuts are set to go into effect in January of 2013. The defense cuts that included could be devastating to our military readiness, according Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. But now some members of Congress might attempt to rescind many, or possibly all, of those automatic cuts. Thankfully, President Obama has stepped up to the plate and said, “Nothing doing.” He has promised to veto any legislation that would allow them to weasel out of the mess they got themselves into.
He will only accept a budget reduction bill that replaces the automatic cuts in whole, like the one they were supposed to have crafted by last week. Although they have more than a year before the automatic cuts kick in, they need to get busy as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the economic health of our country hangs in the balance.
