Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow recently made his first NFL start with the Denver Broncos and led his team to an exciting come-from-behind overtime victory. However, that just caused the Tebow-haters to come crawling out of the woodwork and become louder than ever. I read somewhere that someone has even created a website solely for the purpose of mocking and lampooning Mr. Tebow.
The editor of my local newspaper recently wrote a column asking why so many people dislike Tebow. I have often wondered the same thing. There is really nothing to dislike about Tebow, and everything to like about him. In this day of athletes who can’t seem to stay out of trouble either on or off the field, Tebow is a breath of fresh air. He is a moral, clean-cut guy who has never been in any kind of trouble that I know of. I’ve never heard him badmouth his opponents, teammates, or anyone else. He is also an unabashed Christian who is bold about sharing his faith with the world.
But all of that could be the very reason that so many people hate him. He sets a standard that is too high for them. There’s something about him that causes people’s conscience to bother them. He makes so many people look bad, when compared to him. He reminds them of their shortcomings, which they don’t want to think about. The clean makes the dirty ashamed. The light chases away the darkness, so the darkness naturally hates it. Therefore, there are a lot of people out there who would rather root for trash-talkin’, beer-guzzlin’, fornicatin’ scofflaws than to root for Tim Tebow. Shame on them.
