We need a constitutional amendment in this county that protects people from being held accountable for the mistakes of others. I think it’s outrageous that someone would have to give an account for someone else’s blunder. But it happens every day.
Here’s a prime example. The first time I went to see my doctor after changing employers, and as a result, changing health insurance companies, I was very careful. I made sure I informed the receptionist at his office that I had a new insurance company and that I had her make a copy of my new insurance card. I even brought along a few stickers that my new insurance company provided. These were to be placed on the cover of my chart as a reminder of the fact this company was to be billed for my visits and medical procedures from now on. I understood how Murphy’s Law worked in situations like that, so I wanted to cut it off at the pass.
Well, as luck would have it, all of the precautions I took went for naught. Murphy’s Law had won the day despite everything I tried to do. A few weeks later, I got a bill from the company that handled my blood work for more than $400. Shortly after that, I got a bill from my doctor for more than $120. You guessed it – in both cases, the old insurance company was billed. Of course, they refused to pay, rightly stating that I did not have insurance with them anymore. That meant I had to take action or pay up, all for something that was clearly not my fault.
I’m not proactive, and I don’t like to explain anything to anyone. If I were independently wealthy, I would have just paid the darn bills and been done with them. But I’m not yet at the point in my life where I can just indiscriminately pay bills that I don’t owe, so that meant I had to call the blood testing company, along with the contractor that handles my doctor’s account, and explain the situation to them. That included faxing them a copy of my new insurance card. The fact that I had to do of all of this made me mad as h-e-double-hockey-sticks. I was not a happy camper, to say the least.
Why should I have to waste my time doing work that I had essentially already done because someone else failed to do their job? It’s just not right. Those who are always harping on social justice need to address issues like this as well. They need to get behind a constitutional amendment, or at some general legislation, that will remedy this kind of injustice. In my example, the person who failed to do their job should have had to do the explaining and/or paying. I should not have been bothered.
