Former Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell recently walked out of an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan after she felt that his line of questioning had become “too creepy.” Morgan had been pressing Ms. O’Donnell about her position such topics as gay marriage and sexual abstinence. This was just the latest example of the mainstream media attempting to ridicule those who would stand up for moral values in the public arena.
Instead of walking out (or dialing things back a bit, as most social conservatives usually do during such interviews), she should have become aggressive toward the aggressor. Like they say, the best defense is a good offense. Specifically, she should have boldly stated her beliefs then asked him if he had any problem with that. If he had indicated that he did, she then should have proceeded to castigate and condemn him for his dissent. That would have put in back in his heels. That would have put him on the defensive. That would have put in a position of having to defend the indefensible.
Here’s an example of what she should have said: “YES, I AM OPPOSED TO GAY MARRIAGE. WHO WOULDN’T BE? IT IS A COMPLETELY IMMORAL AND STUPID CONCEPT, OF COURSE. AND, YES, I ADVOCATE SEXUAL ABSTINENCE OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE. IT’S ONLY COMMON SENSE, AND IT WOULD BE THE ANSWER TO MANY OF OUR MODERN SOCIAL ILLS. ANY DECENT PERSON WOULD WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE WITH ME ON BOTH OF THESE ISSUES. DON’T YOU AGREE?
Obviously, a response like that would have made headlines. However, that would be a case of making headlines for all the right reasons. She would have become a modern day heroine to many people in this county. I’m still waiting for someone to step up to the plate and do something like this. I’m not holding my breath, however.
