This is obviously a classic case of the proverbial 800-pound gorilla in the room that no one wants to talk about, but could it be time for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords to step aside and allow someone else to fill her seat in Congress? I realize that her staffers are doing an exceptional job in meeting the needs of the people of her district while she is convalescing, however one thing they can't do is vote on any legislation. Therefore, her constituents are currently without a voting representative. Is that fair to them?
We all sympathize with Rep. Giffords and were horrified at the mindless act of violence that brutally injured her and killed and wounded so many others back in January. However, because there is no constitutional allowance for someone to fill in for her while she is out, I believe she should seriously consider resigning her seat and running for it again later, when or if she is ever able to regain the ability to perform her duties as an elected representative.
people go around burdened by a load of guilt for stuff that they absolutely should not feel guilty about. Specifically, many people feel guilty anytime they are blessed with some kind of good fortune and others are not. For example, let’s say you are one of only a few survivors out of about 300 on a plane that crashes. Or perhaps most of your coworkers get a pink slip while you get to keep your job. Instead of feeling blessed, many people would feel guilty in these situations.
Not me. When good fortune comes my way, I just assume that I had it coming to me in order to offset some of the bad things that I have had to endure. I never consider feeling guilty. I look at this way: While I might not necessarily deserve all of those goods things, I didn’t deserve the bad stuff either. Besides, I have not enjoyed as good a lot in life as most Americans of my generation. I didn't get that generational "boom" in affluence that most baby boomers got.
Now none of this justifies someone stealing, cheating, or otherwise unfairly manipulating circumstances in their favor. No one has a right do those kinds of things, no matter how bad of a deal they’ve gotten from life. We are all obligated to play fair at all times. However, when things are coming your way, don’t turn around and run in the other direction. I'm not.
