Random Rants and Raves #119

Milk: The ultimate cereal killer.

Some adults are fortunate enough to go through their entire lives in the wonderful world of ignorant bliss. I was banished from that world about the time I started first grade.

Since when did the U.S. Supreme Court become SCOTUS?

Journalists like Brian Williams and Christiane Amanpour have no business reporting on matters of faith and religion. It's as ridiculous as some intellectual lightweight like Jessica Simpson trying to discuss the finer points of nuclear physics.

It's a sad commentary on our times when so many unrepentant adulterers, fornicators, and sexual deviants spend so much time wringing their hands over sex offenders who might live in their neighborhoods.

I have often been accused of being boring. I disagree with this assessment. I like excitement as much as anyone -- but only when it's at someone else's expense!

The only thing I don't like about October is the fact that it is followed by November and December.

Today there are six more NFL franchises than there was when I was growing up. Funny though, it seemed like there were more NFL teams back then, not fewer.

2008 Presidential Campaign Update #12

We're now into the fourth quarter of 2007 -- but still nearly three months from the first caucuses and primaries -- and we have 17 official entries, nine Republicans and eight Democrats, in the 2008 presidential sweepstakes.

The Republicans are Representative Duncan Hunter of California, Kansas Senator Sam Brownback, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Arizona Senator John McCain, Representative Ron Paul of Texas, Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo, and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson.

The Democrats are former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, former North Carolina Senator and 2004 Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee John Edwards, Delaware Senator Joe Biden, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, New York Senator and former First Lady Hillary Clinton, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, and Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

Today, I also offer my updated presidential power ratings for both parties, in which I rank the candidates in order of their likelihood to receive their respective party's presidential nomination. At this point, all potential major candidates have either opted in or opted out. Therefore, only the official candidates will be included in the rankings for the rest of the way. Of course, these rankings will fluctuate with time, as the fortunes of the candidates change, some drop out, and new ones emerge. Here's my latest installment:

Democrats:

1. Hillary Clinton

2. Barack Obama

3. John Edwards

4. Bill Richardson

5. Joe Biden

6. Chris Dodd

7. Dennis Kucinich

8. Mike Gravel

Republicans:

1. Rudy Giuliani

2. Fred Thompson

3. Mitt Romney

4. John McCain

5. Mike Huckabee

6. Sam Brownback

7. Ron Paul

8. Tom Tancredo

9. Duncan Hunter

Stay tuned for regular updates, with the next one coming around the second week in November.

Random Rants and Raves #118

For every fact you know, there's someone somewhere (usually on the Internet) who "knows" it's not true -- and can prove it!

I'm thoroughly convinced that everyone has a purpose in life. However, it is apparent that some individuals have a rather limited purpose -- serving only as examples of the kinds of people children will desperately want to avoid becoming when they grow up.

Elderly Gentleman: "Can you please cash this check for me?"

Bank Teller: "How do you want your money."

Elderly Gentleman: "Excuse me."

Bank Teller: "I mean what denominations do you want it back in?"

Elderly Gentleman: "Okay, what about Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, .."

Life is biased toward thoise who persevere.

I've had hard times and I've had easy times. I like the easy times better.

Trouble is the only that will jump into your lap without any effort on your part. Everything else must be actively pursued.

When I was a kid, I used to think Las Vegas was in Tibet. After all, I had always heard people say they were going to Las Vegas, Tibet.

Throw-back uniforms in football are aptly named -- most of them should be thrown back!

Classic Rants and Raves #22

Short cuts almost always come with hidden costs.

Show me a person who is not free to make mistakes and I'll show you a person who is not free to excel.

It never ceases to amaze me how often those who are always talking about standing up for "liberty" are some of the same folks who try to limit the freedom of others.

The only perfect person I admire is Jesus Christ. I have no use for any of the rest!

If your computer is not working properly, it could be because you're not holding your mouse right!

Shouldn't the University of Delaware men's sports teams be called the Blue Roosters? I would feel very uncomfortable playing for any team called the Blue Hens. I wonder how many potential recruits they lose each year because of that name.

A lot of people like to refer to our modern era as "these uncertain times." But has there ever been a period in history when times were certain? I can't think of any.

If right-wing conservatives think you're a left-wing liberal and left-wing liberals think you're a right-wing conservative, you're probably doing something right!

Is it just me or are TV and radio commercials becoming more and more annoying?

Blog Summary

  • No-holds-barred commentary (and humor) by Terry Mitchell on a variety of subjects such as current events, society and culture, politics, personal finance, technology, religion, health and well-being, sports, media issues, and trivia.

His blog entries have been picked up or linked to by mainstream news services like Reuters, CNN, Wall Street Journal Online, USA Today, the Houston Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, the Dallas Morning News, the Chicago Sun Times, the Palm Beach Post, CoxOhio.com, Northwest Florida Daily News, ConsumerAffairs.com, WWL-TV, WMUR, and WNBC. In addition to his blogging, he is currently a regular columnist for etalkinghead.com and American Chronicle. He has also written over 100 feature-length articles that have appeared on numerous Web sites.

In this blog, Terry will never miss an opportunity to assail political correctness or take pot shots at the conventional foolishness.

In this age of information overload, Terry knows that most people don't have time to read long, rambling blog entries. Therefore, he serves up most of his posts on this blog in small, bite-size portions. You'll appreciate his cut-to-the-chase writing style that gets straight to the point without the unnecessary and boring lead-ins.

Also, Terry makes following promises in regard to this blog that very few bloggers will make:

    1) Posts which are always family-friendly and free of profanity and vulgarity (despite this fact, this blog is never boring and never shies away from controversy).

    2) A reasonable effort to assure proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure.

Readers are free to comment, both pro and con, on any post. However, any comments that include profanity or name-calling will be promptly deleted. One who cannot defend his position on a given issue without resorting to such tactics is, at best, too ignorant to adequately defend his position, and at worst, lacking a defensible position altogether.

For Terry's biography (in his own words), see the "ABOUT" link on the left side of this page, just below his photo.
