The Serious Is Now Trivial and Vice Versa
We are living in a day and age when the trivial trumps the serious. Moreover, when interest in the trivial has a majority status, at it has today, the trivial seems serious and the serious seems trivial. Sadly, many people have become so immersed in our popular culture that they no longer seem to know the difference.
Our obsession with the trivial is even reflected on the internet. For example, let's say I decided to start two blogs. If I made the topic of one of my blogs, "Terry's Bad Hair Day Chronicles", and the other, "Terry's World News Commentary", for which do you think I would have the easiest time finding an audience? The former, of course. The sad fact is that more people would be interested in reading about someone's bad hair days than would be interested in reading commentary about world events.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that people should be concentrating on serious issues all the time. We all need our share of diversions, levity, laughter, and plain old nonsense. But should we allow those things to take our focus away from the more pressing matters of our day?
