Random Rants and Raves #62

Knowing some people are rooting against you is almost as much motivation for success as knowing people are rooting for you.

I've often heard people say that, if they knew they only had a short time to live, they would go out and live it up during their remaining time on earth. However, I wonder how many people would actually do this. I bet many of them would become so paralyzed by fear and depression that they wouldn't be able to do anything, even the things that they had been doing.

Those who are pushing for more funding for HIV/AIDS prevention want to have things both ways. They claim that the only ways to contract HIV are through unprotected sex, intravenous drug use, and blood transfusions. However, they are now asking that everyone be tested annually for HIV. Why should everyone be tested if only a subset of the population is at risk?

I once had a college government professor who had a bad habit of spitting when he pronounced words that began with the letter "c". No one wanted to sit on the first or second rows when he was lecturing on civil rights and civil liberties. :-)

I don't understand why local TV news crews feel the need to shove a microphone in someone's face right after one of their relatives has been murdered or has died in a tragic accident. Other than grief and/or anger, what kind of a reaction are they possibly expecting from that person?

Cop shows and courtroom dramas continue to thrive on prime time TV despite the fact that every possible plot line of those genres has probably already been exhausted. I'm amazed that people continue to watch them anyway.

If you still do your taxes the old fashioned way like I do, always remember to wait until you have completed your form to your satisfaction before affixing the label. You wouldn't want to have to try to remove the label from a form that you have fouled up.

The performance of any investment method will always be much better during "back testing" or "paper trading" than during actual practice.

Blog Summary

  • No-holds-barred commentary (and humor) by Terry Mitchell on a variety of subjects such as current events, society and culture, politics, personal finance, technology, religion, health and well-being, sports, media issues, and trivia.

His blog entries have been picked up or linked to by mainstream news services like Reuters, CNN, Wall Street Journal Online, USA Today, the Houston Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, the Dallas Morning News, the Chicago Sun Times, the Palm Beach Post, CoxOhio.com, Northwest Florida Daily News, ConsumerAffairs.com, WWL-TV, WMUR, and WNBC. In addition to his blogging, he is currently a regular columnist for etalkinghead.com and American Chronicle. He has also written over 100 feature-length articles that have appeared on numerous Web sites.

In this blog, Terry will never miss an opportunity to assail political correctness or take pot shots at the conventional foolishness.

In this age of information overload, Terry knows that most people don't have time to read long, rambling blog entries. Therefore, he serves up most of his posts on this blog in small, bite-size portions. You'll appreciate his cut-to-the-chase writing style that gets straight to the point without the unnecessary and boring lead-ins.

Also, Terry makes following promises in regard to this blog that very few bloggers will make:

    1) Posts which are always family-friendly and free of profanity and vulgarity (despite this fact, this blog is never boring and never shies away from controversy).

    2) A reasonable effort to assure proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure.

Readers are free to comment, both pro and con, on any post. However, any comments that include profanity or name-calling will be promptly deleted. One who cannot defend his position on a given issue without resorting to such tactics is, at best, too ignorant to adequately defend his position, and at worst, lacking a defensible position altogether.

For Terry's biography (in his own words), see the "ABOUT" link on the left side of this page, just below his photo.
