Another Big-Governemnt Impostion

Recently, an unwed couple in Kansas successfully sued a landlord for not not renting them a house. The landlord and his wife are Christians who whose moral standards would not allow them to rent to a couple living in sin. Of course, one of the hazards of renting out a house or an apartment is the fact that the government will not not allow you to rent to whomever you wish and will often force you to compromise your moral and religious standards. We will never have true freedom in this country until this unjust imposition on private property rights is abolished.

Questions Are a Deceiver's Worst Enemies

The next time you suspect someone of trying to scam you, start bombarding them with questions. You will find out for certain. For example, a person who is selling something and not trying to deceive will gladly field any and all questions about his/her product. A person who is trying to deceive will eventually become uncomfortable with so many questions and either start providing evasive answers or stop answering them altogether.

Another Major Advantage to Saving

I can never stess enough to young people the importance of saving money. Here's just one of the many advantages: Having money in savings allows a person to take advantage of "fire sales" in which items are being sold well below their actual value out of desperation on the part of the seller. At a time like that, the seller is trying to raise money very quickly and buyers generally have little or no time to search for a loan. Those with the ready cash usually snap up with goods. Those without the cash lose out.

Random Rants #21

Short cuts almost always come with hidden costs.

Show me a person who is not free to make mistakes and I'll show you a person who is not free to excel.

It never ceases to amaze me how often those who are always talking about standing up for "liberty" are some of the same folks who try to limit the freedom of others.

The only perfect person I admire is Jesus Christ. I have no use for any of the rest!

If your computer is not working properly, it could be because you're not holding your mouse right!

Shouldn't the University of Delaware men's sports teams be called the Blue Roosters? I would feel very uncomfortable playing for any team called the Blue Hens. I wonder how many potential recruits they lose each year because of that name.

A lot of people like to refer to our modern era as "these uncertain times." But has there ever been a period in history when times were certain? I can't think of any.

If right-wing conservatives think you're a left-wing liberal and left-wing liberals think you're a right-wing conservative, you're probably doing something right!

Is it just me or are TV and radio commercials becoming more and more annoying?

Disregard Testimonials

Always be skeptical of ads that contain a bunch of testimonials. Since they normally only contain first names and very general locations (ex., Terry from Virginia), testimonials can easily be fabricated or forged. They are some of the favorite tools of scam artists.

Just Say "Stick It" to Click-It-Or-Ticket!

I think the so-called "click it or ticket" seatbelt laws are totally ridiculous. I can understand laws requiring me to have my brakes, for example, in proper working condition, as they might affect the safety of other drivers as well. However, my not wearing a seatbelt endangers no one but myself. I'm going to wear them anyway because I'm a health and safety nut. I just resent the government intrusion into my life that tells me I have to.

Life Insurance Falls Short of its Ideal

Unfortunately, life insurance is different from all other forms of insurance. Various types of liability insurance protect a person's assets against undue losses from lawsuits. Automobile insurance will pay to fix or replace a person's car or truck when it is damaged. Home owner's insurance will repair or replace a person's home when it is damaged. Health insurance will pay for medical professionals to at least try (they may not always succeed) to maintain people's health and/or make them well again when they are sick. However, life insurance makes no attempt to maintain, protect, repair, or recover a person's life!

You Still Have to Start at the Bottom

Too many young people today don't seem to understand that one must almost always start at the bottom before getting to the top. They seem to want to ignore the fact that even most CEOs and big Hollywood stars started out with very lowly jobs, small apartments, and no money in their bank accounts.

Random Rants #20

I just can't root for sports teams that have ugly uniforms. To me, it's comparable to making love to an ugly woman.

TV shows from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and even 80's seem corny today. That's because we are so sophisticated now, perhaps too much so for our own good.

Going against my better judgement has always proven to be the wrong decision.

Never believe anything you see on TV during the months of February, May, July, or November. Those are sweeps months during which broadcasters will do or say anything to boost their ratings.

Any letter or email that begins with, "it has come to my (our) attention", is usually bad news.

Those who are paranoid should consider this: If people were really out to get you, someone would have gotten you already!

Just as I predicted some time ago, the low carb fad is starting to lose steam. Only about half the people who were on one of the popular low carb diets last year are still on it this year. In fact, the company founded by the late Dr. Robert Atkins filed for bankruptcy several months ago.

Throughout your lifetime, you will meet dozens of people who can outthink you, outrun you, out hustle you, outmaneuver you, and outtalk you. But never let anyone outclass you.

Momentum Is Not That Far-Reaching

The idea that a late season win by a sports team will create momentum or "something to build on" for next season is completely bogus. Yet I hear coaches say this all the time, especially when their teams are having a bad season and they are looking for something to salvage. In reality, momentum and accomplishments from one season rarely carry over into the next.

Blog Summary

  • No-holds-barred commentary (and humor) by Terry Mitchell on a variety of subjects such as current events, society and culture, politics, personal finance, technology, religion, health and well-being, sports, media issues, and trivia.

His blog entries have been picked up or linked to by mainstream news services like Reuters, CNN, Wall Street Journal Online, USA Today, the Houston Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, the Dallas Morning News, the Chicago Sun Times, the Palm Beach Post, CoxOhio.com, Northwest Florida Daily News, ConsumerAffairs.com, WWL-TV, WMUR, and WNBC. In addition to his blogging, he is currently a regular columnist for etalkinghead.com and American Chronicle. He has also written over 100 feature-length articles that have appeared on numerous Web sites.

In this blog, Terry will never miss an opportunity to assail political correctness or take pot shots at the conventional foolishness.

In this age of information overload, Terry knows that most people don't have time to read long, rambling blog entries. Therefore, he serves up most of his posts on this blog in small, bite-size portions. You'll appreciate his cut-to-the-chase writing style that gets straight to the point without the unnecessary and boring lead-ins.

Also, Terry makes following promises in regard to this blog that very few bloggers will make:

    1) Posts which are always family-friendly and free of profanity and vulgarity (despite this fact, this blog is never boring and never shies away from controversy).

    2) A reasonable effort to assure proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure.

Readers are free to comment, both pro and con, on any post. However, any comments that include profanity or name-calling will be promptly deleted. One who cannot defend his position on a given issue without resorting to such tactics is, at best, too ignorant to adequately defend his position, and at worst, lacking a defensible position altogether.

For Terry's biography (in his own words), see the "ABOUT" link on the left side of this page, just below his photo.
